ABOUT KATE

Hello and welcome to my blog! My name is Kate Wright, and I am a current student at Baylor University, majoring in Pre-Nursing, and am a member of the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core. My academic interests focus on the medical field, with an emphasis on developing understanding and practical experience in clinical settings. Through this blog, I will reflect on The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman, examining the ethical challenges presented in cross-cultural healthcare and considering them through a biblical lens. My goal is to engage thoughtfully with issues of compassion, communication, and responsibility in medicine while growing as both a student and future healthcare professional.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman tells the true story of a Hmong child, Lia Lee, who was diagnosed with severe epilepsy after her family immigrated to the United States. The book explores the clash between Lia’s Hmong family’s spiritual understanding of her illness and the Western medical system treating her. Despite both sides wanting to help, cultural misunderstandings and poor communication lead to tragic consequences, raising deeper questions about medicine, culture, and the challenges of caring across differences.

What initially drew me to this book was its blend of medical detail and deeply personal storytelling. As someone who plans to go into the medical field, I’m interested in how healthcare professionals interact not only with diseases, but with people who come from very different cultural and personal backgrounds. I know that medicine is not just about diagnosing and treating illness. It is also about communication, trust, and understanding. I will be interacting with a wide variety of patients, each with their own beliefs, values, and ways of understanding health and illness. This story seemed like a powerful example of what can happen when those differences are not fully understood or respected. Ultimately, I chose it because I think it will help me grow into a more thoughtful and empathetic future healthcare provider.
